Understanding what a landslide is actually like is rather difficult when you can only see the deposit and the scar. Now, all landslides are of course different, but in the case of Sichuan we are dealing with some of the most rapid and dangerous ones. So, I thought it would be constructive to post the following Youtube video, which was taken in Malaysia in 1993. Click on it to view - I promise you won't be disappointed. It remains the very best landslide video that I have ever seen, despite the fairly poor resolution.

... start a Lada when it's -27C (-17F) outside.

Since it was -23C (-9F) at my house this morning I thought I'd tell you kids how we had to start our cars when we were young. Here it goes:

0. Get out of the apartment and feel the frost forming on the inside of your nose when you inhale. Swear appropriately

1. Put the key into ignition, turn and listen to a few half-second spaced "wow-wow-wow" from the engine. Not even close

2. Get out of the car, open the hood, take off the air filter and pour some starting fluid (diethyl ether) in/on the carburetor's air intake

3. Turn the key, listen to the engine pick up a couple of times and die again

4. Take the battery out of the car, go back to your apartment, pour some hot water into bath tub and put the battery into water. Warm battery gives more juice! Go back to the car try to start and fail again

5. Go back to the apartment and get a tea kettle full of boiling water. Pour the boiling water on the engine intake to warm it up. Try to start and fail again

6. Get the spark plugs out (the spark plugs by this time are wet and covered in soot), go back to the apartment and put them into the flame of a gas kitchen stove. Re-insert hot and clean spark plugs and try to start. Fail again

7. By this time the battery is dead

8. Walk half a mile to the nearest large street and stop a truck and ask for help for 10 roubles

9. Get the truck to tow the car at 20mph. Try to turn on the first gear and discover that oil in the transmission is so thick, that it is next to impossible

10. Eventually get transmission into the first gear and discover that the wheels of the car just skid on the packed snow. Turn on the third gear

11. 200 yards down the road the engine starts! Must not let right foot off the gas pedal!

12. At this point 1.5 hours have gone by

13. Go to work, park the car. Every two hours get outside and start the car. If you wait too long and car does not start go to step 0

Поскольку некоторые интересуются и раздаются несознательные выкрики, что "снег выпал" или "иней на стекле с утра", докладываю.

На улице сейчас (обед) -14C, ночью до -18C, снег упал в субботу и добавил сегодня. Согреваюсь только на четвертой миле пробежки, зато быстро -- сегодня выбежал из 35 минут, что случается только зимой.

Чтобы никто не подумал, что у нас тут холодно отмечу, что широта здесь 40 градусов, в Евр... Азии это примерно Туркменистан. По историческим данным сегодня (8 декабря):

Record High: 73° in 1940
Record Low: -14° in 1919

Это между +23C и -25C для европейцев. Готов поспорить, что в следующие три недели будет ну не +25C, но +15C.

А в ваших локалях (краях) какие на сегодняшнюю дату рекордные температуры? Это, типа опрос, во!

Сегодня меня укачало (got motion sick) от игры... в Viva Pinata. Viva Pinata!? Там же движения нет почти вообще, откуда? Как? Дело идет к тому, что в Xbox 360 невозможно будет играть вообще. Интересно, что с Nintendo DS проблем нет. WoW тоже, кажется, был проблемой.

Интересно, я в меньшинстве? Старшая дочь страдает тем же. Гены, блин. Все еще надеюсь, что студии начнут тестировать игры на motion sickness и конкретно таких как я. Судя по Интернетам нас немало:

Looking at some of the biggest games on the Xbox 360 confirms my theory. Halo 3 only has gun bob. Call of Duty 4 only has head bob. BioShock only has gun bob. Half-Life 2 doesn’t really have either, or it is very slight. I do know of many people that got sick from H-L 2 from, I’m guessing, the rapid camera movement and the “close, but not quite realistic” graphics. None of these games makes me sick. Gears of War, on the other hand, makes me ill. The camera in GoW is meant to be like a battlefield cameraman following you around, so there is a little bit of bob as the cameraman walks around, and Marcus is bobbing around as he moves, which causes the problem. F.E.A.R. also has slight gun and head bob. That awful Oblivion wannabe Two Worlds is one of the worst offenders because it couples chunky graphics with head and weapon bob. Also, the recently released Conflict: Denied Ops has slight head bob, but also severe weapon bob that makes me sick enough after just a couple of minutes that I actually can’t play it long enough to review it at all. At least the other games I mentioned I was able to play in 30-45 minute increments.

Кернелы компиляются, делать нечего.

А вот я помню как мне было года отсилы 3-4, а по телевизору показывали в первый раз Штирлица. И все соседи к нам на даче ходили смотреть черно-белый телевизор.

Мюллера я называл "Фюллер-Мюллер", и был исключительно впечатлен тем, как "кокнули бутылкой Холтоффа". Ничего больше, кстати, из этого лета не помню.

(Ну, понятно, все уже слышали, что Тихонов умер).

UTAH COUNTY -- The Nutty Putty Cave has become the permanent resting place for a young medical student who died after getting stuck in a small passage earlier this week.

Family of John Jones agreed with experts and government officials Friday -- there will be no further attempt to recover his body and the popular cave will be permanently sealed.

Jones died late Wednesday night after being trapped in the caves for more than 27 hours. Rescuers worked furiously to get him out -- but in the end ran out of time.

Только я собрался посвятить некоторое время изучению javascript, как наступил в сайт Cigna, где мне не смогли показать список врачей в моем FF (в IE смогли) и, тут же сразу после, сайт Sony, где меня не смогли даже залогинить (в IE смогли).

Весь энтузиазм сразу и пропал. Такое впечатление, что вернулись в десять лет назад, когда javascript был неприличным словом...

Разумеется, грустная часть состоит в том, что юзер должен иметь возможность поставить программу, просто не в system-wide location. Как у Apple. Когда это случится в маздае и Линуксе проблемы с malware или пройдут или станут значительно проще лечиться. Апгрейды ОС станут тривиальны, кстати, etc.

Несомненно, что выкрик Вилсона придиктован расизмом и ненавистью. Это эмоции, которые лежат в основе чувств значительного количества местных республиканцев, часто даже ценой противоречия их же непосредственной выгоде и благополучию. Отсюда и все эти таун-холлы с брызгающими слюной людьми без страховки и без денег, протестующими против предоставления им же страховки. То же самое с антииммигрантскими активистами и добровольцами, патрулирующими границу.

Они просто НЕНАВИДЯТ меньшинства/бедных/etc больше, чем любят себя!
